How to use WebberKeeper

Please be patient while this How To develops :>}

Toolbar ~ Top Level

The top portion of the toolbar holds your 'top level functions', things you will probably only use when you first log in or want to log out.

  • Home basically just refreshes the page. Click this if changes you made don't appear to stick, like if you add a link and it doesn't show up immediately. When there are more things to do in the future, this link will be needed to take you back to your bookmarks.

  • Setup pops up a window with a link that you can drag to your bookmark bar (usually the bar just above the tabs or below the back, forward, home buttons in your browser). If you bookmark that link then visit a page you want to bookmark, clicking the link will pop up the add link form with all the link info already filled in. Having the dock open already is not required and if you aren't logged you can do so in the popup.

  • Setup also contains a Bookmark Importer that you can use to add all of the bookmarks in your browser to your WebberKeeper account.

  • Logout Duh!

Toolbar ~ Bottom Level

The functions in the bottom of the toolbar are the ones that manage your bookmarks and categories.

  • Add brings up the add link form and lets you fill in a bookmark by hand. You can add it to a category that already exists or create a new category to put it in.

  • Edit switches you to 'edit mode', putting an e next to each link and category. Clicking the e allows you to change the name of the link or category. You will notice that the 'Edit' link changes to a 'Normal' link when you click it. Click 'Normal' to exit 'Edit Mode'.

  • Delete switches you to 'delete mode', putting an x in every category and link. Clicking the x in a category will delete that category and all contained links. Clicking the x on a link will just delete that link. You will notice that the 'Delete' link changes to a 'Normal' link when you click it. Click 'Normal' to exit 'Delete Mode'.

  • Close All closes all open categories.

Organizing

What You See: There are two metaphors that describe the way your bookmarks are displayed: one is the 'Tree View' and the other is the 'Parent-Child Relationship'. The 'Tree View' puts the root of your bookmarks at the top of the heirarchy (counter-intuitive, I know). Each category you create branches off of the root (or another category) and each link is a leaf. The Parent-Child Relationship describes the same thing a different way. The root is the parent of everything in the tree. Each branch is a child of the root, and each leaf is the child of its respective branch (and/or the root). A third metaphor may be necessary to adequately explain this concept. This isn't simply a 'top-down' relationship, it's an 'inside-outside' or 'nesting' relationship. Categories can be nested within other categories and all categories are nested within the root which creates a multi-dimesional system. If category A is below category B then A is not a child of B. A must be 'nested' inside of B.

All of your links and categories are sorted by simply dragging and dropping. Click and hold on a link or category, drag to the new place you want it to reside, and release. You can nest categories inside categories and move links around wherever you want. You can even have uncategorized links by dragging them all the way to the left.
